Béla Bartók
(1881-1945)
-- Béla Bartók was born on this date in the small Banatian town of Nagyszentmiklos in Austria-Hungary (now Sannicolau Mare, Romania). A great Hungarian composer, Bartók also was one of the most significant musicians of the 20th century. His music was invigorated by the themes, modes, and rhythmic patterns of the Hungarian and other folk music traditions he studied, which he synthesized with influences from his contemporaries into his own distinctive style. An avowed religious nonconformist, Bartók grew up in a Unitarian family and became an advocate for Unitarianism. (His son, Béla Jr., later became leader of the Hungarian Unitarians.) His statue stands in front of the Second Unitarian Church in Budapest, which in 2001 was renamed the Bela Bartók Unitarian Church.
