"The Maine Game Warden Service actually has a chaplain for search-and-rescue missions. A Unitarian Universalist minister and author, Kate Braestrup is called in when children disappear in the woods or when snowmobilers disappear under the ice. She likes to say that she is "religious but not spiritual" — a doer whose sense of God emerges from what happens between and among people. We hear the wisdom she draws from the world of law enforcement in the wild where, as she puts it, 'the rubber meets the road' theologically."

-- This is the intro. to an audio presentation that you can download (mp3 download, Realplayer stream, etc.) of a (June 26, 2008) program on National Public Radio, about UU minister (and author) Kate Braestrup and her phenomenal work with the Game Warden Service of the state of Maine. The entire program runs about 53 minutes in length, but is very much worth the effort I think. (Frankly, I wish that every UU, or everyone who seeks to know more about Unitarian Universalism, would listen to this);
-- Rev. Braestrup even "hits the nail on the head" in describing UU as a 'way of looking at' religion, instead of a specific body of doctrine or theology. As I say here, the core of Unitarian Universalism is really an attitude, a process or "paradigm" for seeking and expressing matters of faith and conscience, growth and transformation--and it's the rich, centuries-old legacy of the development of that attitude, of that process. At the end of the day, it finds its strength in premises and convictions rather than literalistic, legalistic dogma, and promotes uprightness of character and relationship more than rightness of opinion and doctrine. At least that's my "take" on it...what do you think?
